Atkins delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/newsroom\/speeches-statements\/atkins-remarks-society-corporate-governance-07-09-2026-remarks-society-corporate-governance-conference\">remarks<\/a> at the Society for Corporate Governance Conference.\u00a0 In remarks that build on his previous speeches describing the \u201cnew day\u201d at the SEC, Chairman Atkins described his views of our country\u2019s founders\u2019 basic principles, stating:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cTwo hundred and fifty years ago, our Founders embraced basic principles.\u00a0 That government must be limited. That its purpose is to set the conditions for prosperity, not to engineer it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He then went on to say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cPresented with a 40 percent decline in public companies over the past few decades, we are summoned not to create more complexity nor reinvent our mandate, but to restore it to its foundation: that is, disclosure of material information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His remarks addressed a number of areas where he believes appropriate SEC rulemaking will encourage more companies to access our capital markets.\u00a0 The first was reforming disclosure rules to be focused on materiality and perhaps including a \u201cmateriality overlay\u201d in all disclosure requirements.\u00a0 The second was reforming the shareholder proposal process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, your thoughts and comments are welcome!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On July 9, 2026, SEC Chairman Paul S.
