{"id":2084,"date":"2021-11-04T13:04:14","date_gmt":"2021-11-04T17:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seci.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=2084"},"modified":"2021-11-04T13:04:14","modified_gmt":"2021-11-04T17:04:14","slug":"ifrs-foundation-creates-international-sustainability-standards-board-and-announces-consolidation-with-the-cdsb-and-vrf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seciblog.pli.edu\/index.php\/ifrs-foundation-creates-international-sustainability-standards-board-and-announces-consolidation-with-the-cdsb-and-vrf\/","title":{"rendered":"IFRS Foundation Creates International Sustainability Standards Board and Announces Consolidation with the CDSB and VRF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the SEC has been working on its climate change and ESG rule proposal (see more below), the IFRS Foundation has been actively considering the need for a new sustainability standards board.\u00a0 This September 2020 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifrs.org\/content\/dam\/ifrs\/project\/sustainability-reporting\/consultation-paper-on-sustainability-reporting.pdf\">Consultation Paper<\/a>\u201d provided background and sought input about creating a separate sustainability standards board.\u00a0 In February 2021, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifrs.org\/news-and-events\/news\/2021\/02\/trustees-announce-next-steps-in-response-to-broad-demand-for-global-sustainability-standards\/\">Foundation announced<\/a> their intention to formally consider establishing a new board.\u00a0 One month later, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifrs.org\/news-and-events\/news\/2021\/03\/trustees-announce-strategic-direction-based-on-feedback-to-sustainability-reporting-consultation\/\">March 2021 statement<\/a> set out the strategic direction for the proposed new board.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation\u2019s work came to fruition quickly.\u00a0 On November 3, 2021, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/\">26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26)<\/a> in Glasgow, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifrs.org\/\">IFRS Foundation Trustees announced<\/a> that they have formed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifrs.org\/groups\/international-sustainability-standards-board\/\">International Sustainability Standards Board<\/a> or ISSB.\u00a0 This Board will focus on building a \u201cglobal baseline of high-quality sustainability standards to meet investors information needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the creation of the ISSB, the Foundation also announced that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdsb.net\/\">Climate Disclosure Standards Board<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuereportingfoundation.org\/\">Value Reporting Foundation<\/a> will consolidate with the ISSB.\u00a0 The Climate Disclosure Standards Board is an initiative of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).\u00a0 The Value Reporting Foundation was formed via the recent consolidation of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the International Integrated Reporting Council.<\/p>\n<p>The IFRS Foundation has already begun foundational work on standard setting, forming a Technical Readiness Working Group to develop prototype climate and general disclosure requirements.\u00a0 You can review progress so far in this \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifrs.org\/content\/dam\/ifrs\/groups\/trwg\/summary-of-the-trwg-work-programme.pdf\">Summary of the Technical Readiness Working Group\u2019s Programme of Work<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While all this is happening in the international realm, <strong>the SEC is continuing to work on its approach to climate change and ESG reporting<\/strong>.\u00a0 Chair Gary Gensler made this clear in his speech \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/news\/speech\/gensler-pri-2021-07-28\">Prepared Remarks Before the Principles for Responsible Investment \u2018Climate and Global Financial Markets\u2019 Webinar<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cCompanies and investors alike would benefit from clear rules of the road.
